Lederbalsam Day

image

Ah, Lederbalsam! Far too infrequently, I get out the Lederbalsam and have a go at the leather furniture in the living room. It is not a trivial task.  Lederbalsam is a wonderfully aromatic concoction of lanolin & beeswax that is used to clean and condition leather items. I first learned about it from a colleague who’s daughter rode show jumping horses. The equestrian set use Lederbalsam for saddles, boots, reins and all sorts of horsey paraphernalia.

On a full set of leather living room furniture the effort is towards the Herculean end of the spectrum. The Lederbalsam is applied by hand – rubbed vigorously into the dry leather and left to sit for five or ten minutes then the excess is wiped off and the leather buffed with a terry towel. It is an exercise that would make Mr. Miyagi proud.

Conditioning the armchair, the chair-and-a-half  and the foot-stool were enough effort for today. The couch will have to wait ’til another day.  Besides, it smells so nice – why not have that to look forward to?

Duct Tape Canoe

Alyssa got me some duct tape for Christmas this year.  I’m planning to use it for various repairs and projects around the house. Alyssa has some other ideas:

Besides this cute little paddler in a duct tape canoe, I also have a new duct tape wallet.

Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas!!

Christmas Eve! Fresh snow has fallen, it is crisp and cold outside, but cozy and warm in the house. The fire is burning, the tree lit and the kids are playing together. Of course, there are myriad things to be done – the normal chores and routines of life; but on Christmas Eve it is nice to put all that aside, to relax with a good book and a coffee and to be content to have a bit of time to reflect on the year almost gone and the next one ahead. We have had quite the year, the highs and the lows always run with each other, don’t they? We have had job changes and health concerns, fine holidays and good family times, car troubles and amazing adventures.

The days fly by ever faster and I always enjoy being able to take a bit of time to reflect on the year rushing to a close. Browsing through the year’s  photos and blog posts, recalling the good days and the times that were more challenging, it is easy to see how blessed we are. Continue Reading »
