Sun Dog

I’m having a bit of a down day. The last couple of weeks have been a little busy with work and school activities. Each of us has also managed to catch a cold at some point, too.

Sadly, my idea of a down day is to catch up on some of the house work, straighten out the office, get our business books ready for the accountant, catch up on some loose ends for work, …

It’s not like I don’t have good examples to learn from in life:

Really, how hard is it to find a sunny spot, curl up and snooze?

Guess where we are?

First date night of 2012!

We dressed up for the occasion (of course!) and after the performance even went out for a late night bite to eat. Mark was still awake when we got home so he took a picture of us.

Comments guessing who is “beauty” and who is “beast” will be dealt with severely!

Rubik’s Cube

It only took me about 30 years but I finally solved the Rubik’s cube that I got for Christmas back in 1980 or 1981. It’s not that it has never been solved before, several annoyingly bright people have solved it for me (or maybe it was showing off?). I’ve also cheated and pulled it apart and re-assembled it correctly a time or two. However, today I actually solved it.

I didn’t figure it out myself, exactly. I found a YouTube video that actually gave a sequence of algorithms to follow. It does bug me a bit that I don’t know why the algorithms work. Maybe over the holidays I’ll see if I can actually understand what is really going on…

Otherwise it will be back to the junk drawer for that toy for another 20 or 30 years!

Rafting the Bow

It’s a beautiful day after a few rainy days and we are on the Bow River – rafting with Uncle Brian. Steven, Mark and Alyssa headed out with me and we met Brian at Ft Calgary. We dropped our van off then drove to Bowness park to launch the zodiac.

We’ve just got on the river and here are the first couple of pictures.

UPDATE: Sunday the 17th.

Here is a map of the route we took down the river:

We were on the water sometime before 1:30pm from Bowness Park and out of the river about 4:20 at the confluence of the Elbow and the Bow. We covered about 18 km in that 3 hours.  Compared to other trips down the Bow in previous years, that is really fast. Usually we have done the river later in the summer and that distance would take about 5 hours. The Bow was still pretty high and turbid with spring runoff, lots of the little islands (gravel bars, really) were under water.  In particular, the big gravel bar at the Elbow wasn’t there and the water was moving fast – we nearly overshot our landing spot, which would have been a pain!
