Winging Our Way Home

We’ve had quite the good week away, great location to visit, great meals, great company a d great weather. After lunch on Friday, we left Thetis Island and went to visit some friends in Nanoose Bay, north of Nanaimo. We had a fine dinner with Keith and Pippa, former neighbors from Chestermere. Their daughter Meryl joined us as well. Meryl used to babysit our kids when she, and they, were younger.

We stayed overnight in Parksville and spent the morning visiting other friends that just moved there from Calgary. In the afternoon, we made our way back to Vancouver on the ferry and are now just about to take off to fly home.

RV Trip to Vancouver Island

So we are on our way to the West Coast – except we were tired of that old RV and had to get something bigger. So we got an Airbus 319. Well, Air Canada is letting us have the use of it for an hour or so.
Actually, with all the Lancaster visit business, we just got too pressed for time to be able to drive comfortably, so we are flying to Vancouver and renting a car. We’ll be at Thetis this afternoon.

Father & Son Roadtrip

Steven turned 13 this past week and so I decided that the two of us should take a little roadtrip to mark the occasion. So, after a pancake breakfast at home yesterday, we jumped into the van and headed for the Highwood. After a week of rain, Saturday was a transition day – some sun, some clouds and some rain. Our plans to do some hiking fell apart as there was a big 100 mile relay run going on along Highway 40 and there were hundreds of people parked along the road and every trailhead lot was jammed. Normally you need to keep an eye out for mountain goats, which can be quite unpredictable – but people seem to have even less road sense!

We had a nice supper in Canmore then checked into our hotel and spent over 2 hours in the pool. This morning we just finished breakfast and will go for a swim before checking out. After that, who knows? There is a street fair in town today or maybe we will do a little hiking – it’s a fine day and we don’t have to be home til dark!

Capernwray Harbour

We are more than halfway through our week here on Thetis Island, it is going by very quickly. The days are very full with activities for everyone in the family, the meals are great and the weather has been fine.
The kids have bee enjoying their group activities, both Steven and Mark are in the same group, so it has been neat to see them looking out for one another as they go through some of the team building challenges. Alyssa’s group is small, just 5 kids, and all girls – they are having great fun doing crafts and exploring the beach.
Brenda and I are enjoying the speakers, but the highlight of the week so far was last night’s gourmet 7 course meal. It was for the adults only lasting from 5:00 to 8:30 pm while the kids were fed and overseen by the staff. It was a great evening enjoyed as much by the kids as by us.
Today, we went as a family on a boat trip (a 3 hour tour!!) around the north end of Thetis and over to Valdes to drift along the cliffs. It was a pretty cool way to spend the afternoon.

Tomorrow we have a 6:00 am start to go fishing and kayaking.
