Spiffy New Camera
After nearly 6 years, we decided to replace our digital camera. Our old digital was a Sony DSC-P9, which was a very good camera when we bought it in 2002, just before Alyssa was born. However, much has changed in the world of digital photography in these few years and the old camera was having some light metering problems. Many outdoor shots were turning out badly overexposed.
After a fair bit of research we narrowed the field down to either a Canon or a Panasonic, we wanted image stabilization, a good optical zoom and a compact form-factor. In the end we decided on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. It’s predecessor (the TZ3) was a highly regarded camera and we were sold on the 10X Leica lens (28mm – 280mm equivalent) especially the wide angle performance.
I found the camera for quite a good price at Mostly Digital, a web retailer in Ontario and ordered the camera last week. It arrived on Monday and of course, the weather has turned blustery and rainy so I’ve only had a chance to take a few shots. But I am quite impressed with what I’ve seen so far. The shot at the top of this post is the first shot that I took with the camera – despite the nice camera, its the subject that really makes the shot good! Check out the shots below that show the same scenes from the same position at both ends of the zoom range:
I’m hoping that we get a nice sunny day this week so that I can take the new and the old cameras up to Nose Hill in Calgary and get some good shots comparing the two cameras.
