Easter Breakfasts
I’ve been encouraged by Dave to write my own blog-post about stuff. Funny, ask me to get up in front of a group of people and I’ll trample whoever is in my way to get to the stage. Ask me to write something for the masses and I’m looking for a sharp stick. So, here I am with my first blog post. So what does one write? I’m sure it should be something terribly profound, witty, maybe even something of an epiphany. Sorry, not this time. Instead, it will be about food, family and fun – in the words of Julie Andrews, “a few of my favorite things”.
So it’s Easter weekend and we don’t have the responsibility of cooking a big Easter meal but we do have time for leisurely breakfasts with the kids, instead of the gobble and go of school day mornings.
I love the perceptions the kids have about how they think things should be done to celebrate special occasions. On the weekends we do the standard fare of pancakes, waffles, muffins, bacon and sausage patties. Not all at once but you get the drift. So how do you Easterfy brekkie?
When you give kids the freedom to be creative this is what they come up with. Friday we had blue pancakes. Excuse me, I must stand corrected. According to Steven they were turquoise. In addition to color we added every type of chip we could: chocolate, white chocolate, and peanut. We also had pink crepes. Alyssa and I thought it might deter the men folk from eating them, thus leaving more for us. We were wrong. 🙁 We also discovered that we had forgotten to buy whipping cream. “No problem” said the kids, “Let’s use ice cream!” So we did! Delicious! Don’t know why we didn’t think of it sooner.
This morning the menu was cinnamon buns. Alyssa’s suggestion was to make them yellow. Which quickly led to the discussion of what color the icing should be. Without ruining the surprise all I will say is that is rhymes with nurple.
Easter colored food must be accompanied by Easter paraphernalia so out to the garage Dave went to fetch the lavender Rubbermaid tote of all things Easter. The Easter tree was quickly assembled, the Easter tablecloth placed over the table and egg shaped plates set all in readiness for Easter feasting.
Added to this has been Alyssa’s reminders that Mr. and Mrs. Easter bunny need to hop to it and get goodies for the Easter baskets. She even went as far as pulling out the plastic eggs and Easter baskets. Not sure how much of the insistence is because she is really afraid we will forget or as she is quickly leaving the world of lower elementary where classroom parties, reward stickers, and outdoor recess are no longer the norm.
Amongst the decorations and colored Easter food, there were the questions of what is important about Easter Monday and why do we have to go to school on that day. Where is the book like the Christmas ones we read? And just when I think the profound deep questions of the true meaning of Easter are about to emerge I’m brought back to earth with, “So what color is breakfast tomorrow?”
What color indeed? I’m intrigued with what they may come up with and curious what the freedom of spontaneous creativity will produce. Perhaps the deep aspects of Easter are expressed in colors, questions, and being part of a family that is willing to explore, create and ponder alongside each other in all that matters.
