The Long Way Home
Today was a beautiful fall day in southern Alberta; just the type of day made for playing hooky from work and heading to the mountains on the motorbikes. Sadly, we couldn’t quite pull that off, but did at least take the scenic route home after work was done. Brenda & I had both taken our motorbikes to work today – the kids had a professional day off of school and Steven was game to hold the fort for the day.
I met Brenda at the museum and we headed out of town towards the east. The day was warm (21° for the high), the winds light and skies blue. Out in the countryside, the harvest was going full tilt, lots of combines in the fields raising clouds of dust as they worked. However, we did ride past one farmer who appeared to lack a basic understanding of the process – despite the enormous combine parked at the edge of his field, he was pushing a lawn mower around in the stubble. Two other farmers were just standing back and watching. I really have no idea what that was about!
Eventually we found ourselves in Langdon for gas and coffee. The little coffee shop that we’d been to in the past seems to have gone bust, so we went down the block a bit and to a very nice Italian restaurant where we decided that we’d just have dinner. I had a wonderful spicy Italian sausage penne and Brenda had ravioli – both dishes were very good. We topped it off by splitting a Tiramisu. We were almost too full to ride home.
Headed home at dark – the temperature still very fine and no breeze, a pretty good commute if you ask me!
