Calgary Tower, reprised

A couple of posts ago I wrote about our visit to the Calgary Tower in September.  When my Dad saw the post he mentioned that he had just come across some similar pictures as he was scanning old slides into digital format.  I was curious to see just how much the Calgary skyline has changed over the years, so I got Dad to email me some of his pictures.

Dad sent a few pictures from 1969 and some from the early 80s (1980 and 1981).  Have a look at this gallery to see how drastic the changes have been in the past 30 years.  It is interesting to note that Calgary’s population was about 370,000 in 1969, with a total of about 1.5 million in the province of Alberta.  By 1981 Calgary had grown to about 593,000 population.  Today Calgary has a population of 1,043,000 and the province has grown to over 3.5 million people.

Salsa!

We spent Saturday evening dancing about the kitchen chopping, slicing, stirring, simmering and canning this year’s batch of fresh salsa.  Despite the less than perfect growing conditions and the hailstorm that thumped most of the garden in August, we managed to harvest enough tomatoes for about 7 or 8 litres of salsa.   We picked up the extra ingredients on Saturday afternoon and got busy in the kitchen after dinner.

Calgary Tower

A few weeks ago we had an out of town visitor stay with us and the Saturday was one of the spectacular clear, sunny days that we have been blessed with this autumn.  Such a fine day called for a trip up the Calgary Tower, hang the expense!  We got downtown early in the afternoon and spent about an hour checking out the sights and, of course, standing on the glass floor hanging out over 9th Avenue. The views were terrific as you can see in these photos:

As a little aside, the last time we were up the Tower was the day that the glass floor was opened to the public and I wrote a post about that visit early in the life of this blog when I was looking for a photo to post.  Have a look at that post to see what has changed and what has not.
